Are AI product photos allowed on Etsy?
What Etsy's listing image rules say about AI, and how to follow them
Quick Answer
Yes. Etsy allows AI-edited and AI-generated listing images as long as they accurately show the item a buyer will receive: its colour, condition, scale and materials. The catch is that most listings must also include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, and that photo can't be touched by AI or editing software. Use AI images for your lifestyle and scene shots, and keep a real photo in the set.
What Etsy requires
One unedited photo of the real item
For most products, your listing needs at least one photo of the actual item against a real background that hasn't been edited or changed in any way. No AI, no background swap, no retouching. Some product types have exceptions, covered below.
Every image must be accurate
All other images can use editing tools and AI, but each one must still show the item's true colour, condition, scale and materials. An image that creates false expectations about what the buyer will receive is not allowed, however it was made.
Allowed on your other images
- Adjusting lighting, exposure or colour balance to match real life
- Cropping, resizing or straightening the image
- Cleaning up or replacing the background, as long as the item itself is shown accurately
- Placing the item in a scene to show its size or how it is used
Not allowed on any image
- Changing the item's actual colour, texture or condition
- Removing or hiding defects, cracks or damage
- Using AI to change the core design or features of the item
- Making the item look better, higher quality or different from what the buyer receives
Rules by product type
Physical items you make or source
Include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. AI and edited images can fill the other slots if they show the item accurately.
Print-on-demand
Etsy allows a stock photo mockup when the stock photo's owner has authorised its use. AI mockups are not named in the policy, so the safest listing also shows a photo of a real printed sample.
Custom and made-to-order items
Show photos of real, finished pieces you have made before, so buyers can judge the quality of your work.
Patterns, recipes, seeds and kits
Include at least one real, unedited photo of something made with your product. AI images cannot be the only images of the finished result.
Digital downloads with nothing to show
For items like audio files, Etsy allows representative imagery, including AI images, as long as it doesn't mislead buyers. Other digital downloads should show a preview of the content.
How to build an Etsy listing with AI photos
Take your unedited photo first
Photograph the real item on a real surface in good daylight. Upload it to Etsy exactly as it came off your camera or phone. Etsy recommends making the first photo the clearest, most realistic view of the item, so this is a good one to lead with.
Use AI for the lifestyle and scene shots
Etsy allows up to 10 images per listing. Fill the rest with your item in context: on a table, in a styled room, worn by a model, or next to everyday objects that show its size.
Check every AI image against the real item
Run through the checklist below before you upload. If an image changes anything about the item, leave it out and generate another.
Say which images were edited
Etsy recommends noting AI edits in your listing description. A short line is enough, for example:
"Photo 1 is an unedited photo of this item. The lifestyle photos were made with AI editing tools and show the same item."
Checklist for every AI image
Colour
Hold the generated image next to your real photo. The item should be the same colour and finish, not warmer, brighter or more saturated.
Text, logos and engravings
Read every word on the item. Letters, logos and engravings should be exactly as they are on the real piece.
Size and scale
A ring, a candle or a mug should look its real size next to hands, props and furniture. Etsy names scale as something your images must get right.
Details and texture
Count stones, beads, buttons and stitches. Check that wood grain, glaze, fabric weave and metal finish match the real item.
Condition
If your item has visible marks, a patina or a handmade irregularity, it should still show. Vintage sellers especially: never let an image hide wear.
What happens if images mislead buyers
If a buyer receives an item that is materially different from its images and opens a case, Etsy may refund the buyer, and you may be responsible for the refund amount. Etsy can also remove misleading listings, and repeated violations can lead to further action, up to removing the shop. Accurate images protect your reviews as much as your listings.
