What Lume writes into your image files

The AI tag, the optional product details, and how to check any file yourself

Quick Answer

Nothing hidden goes into a Lume file unless you choose it. In Settings you can turn on the IPTC tag that says the image was made with AI, which Google Shopping requires, and choose whether zip exports carry the product name and SKU. That is all: no Lume name, no watermark, and never your name, email or location.

What's inside each file

Marked as AI-generated

Field
Iptc4xmpExt:DigitalSourceType = trainedAlgorithmicMedia
Where
Every download, zip export and Shopify publish, once you turn it on.
Can I turn it off?
Off by default. Turn it on in Settings if you sell on Google Shopping or to EU buyers.

Product name and SKU

Field
dc:title (product name) and dc:identifier (SKU)
Where
Zip exports only, so each file still says which product it shows after it leaves the zip. Single downloads already carry the product name in the file name.
Can I turn it off?
On by default. Switch it off in Settings.

What we never write into a file

  • A Lume name, credit line or watermark
  • Your name, email address or Lume account details
  • Your location or any camera or device data
  • Prompts, template names or anything about how the image was made beyond the optional AI tag

When to turn the AI tag on

Google Shopping requires it

Google Merchant Center says every AI-generated image must contain the IPTC DigitalSourceType trainedAlgorithmicMedia tag, and asks merchants not to remove it. That applies to your main, additional and lifestyle images, including products synced from Shopify or other stores.

The EU AI Act asks for it

Article 50 of the EU AI Act, which applies from 2 August 2026, asks providers of AI systems that generate images to mark the output in a machine-readable way. For images made with Lume, that provider is us.

It answers for you

If a marketplace or buyer asks how an image was made, a file that says so answers for you. Google also puts an invisible SynthID watermark in the pixels of every Gemini image, so an image can be recognised as AI-made either way.

Changing your file info settings

1

Open Settings

Sign in at lume.pics and go to Settings, Image file info.

2

Choose what goes in

Each row says which marketplace rules depend on it. "Marked as AI-generated" is off by default; turn it on if you sell on Google Shopping or to EU buyers. "Product name and SKU" applies to zip exports.

3

Download again

The change applies to every file Lume hands you from then on: downloads, zip exports and Shopify publishes, including images you made earlier. Files you already downloaded keep what they had, so download them again if you need the new version.

How to check a file yourself

ExifTool (Mac, Windows, Linux)

Free and the most complete. Run this in a terminal to list every XMP field in the file:

exiftool -XMP:all your-image.png

Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom or Bridge

In Photoshop, open the image and choose File > File Info. The IPTC Extension and Raw Data sections show the source type and credit.

Quick check without extra software

Open the file in a plain text editor and search for trainedAlgorithmicMedia. If it's there, the tag is in the file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Lume images carry the AI-generated tag?
Only if you turn it on. In Settings, under Image file info, switch on Marked as AI-generated and every file you download, export or publish from then on carries it, including images you made earlier. Google Shopping requires the tag on AI images and may disapprove products without it, and in the EU AI images are expected to stay marked, so turn it on if you sell there. You can switch it off again the same way.
Does the AI tag show on my product page?
No. It sits inside the file, not on the image. Buyers only see it if a marketplace chooses to show a label, or if they inspect the file.
Does Lume put its own name or a watermark in my files?
No. There is no visible watermark and no Lume name or credit inside the file. The only things Lume can write are the AI-generated tag, if you turned it on, and in zip exports your product name and SKU.
Why is the product name and SKU only in zip exports?
A single download is already named after your product, for example gold-hoop-earrings_3f9a1c.png. In a zip of many images, the name and SKU inside each file keep it identifiable after it is renamed or moved out of the folder.
Does Lume add the Amazon contains-synthetic-performer tag?
Not yet. Amazon asks for that keyword in the XMP dc:subject field when an image shows a photorealistic AI-generated person. You can add it with ExifTool: exiftool -XMP-dc:Subject+=contains-synthetic-performer your-image.jpg
Is there anything else in the image that marks it as AI?
Lume generates images with Google Gemini, and Google states that all images generated with it include a SynthID watermark. SynthID is an invisible mark in the pixels, separate from the file metadata, and Lume has no control over it.
Will editing the image remove the tag?
It can. Some editors, compressors and screenshot tools drop metadata when they save a new file. Upload the file Lume gave you where you can, and check it with ExifTool if you edited it.
